The Cowra Regional Art Gallery was established in September 2000 and is located in a cultural precinct which includes the Cowra Library, the Cowra Civic Centre, Australia's World Peace Bell and the Cowra Shire Council Chambers. The Gallery is purpose built with high ceilings, track lighting, art museum security and environmental controls.

The Cowra Regional Art Gallery is committed to offering a broad range of curated and touring exhibitions derived from regional, state and national sources covering the visual arts, crafts and design including historical and contemporary themes and subjects.

The Gallery’s varied program of high quality exhibitions includes painting, sculpture, photography, printmaking, textiles, ceramics and glass as well as public programs, workshops and outreach activities for the enjoyment of the community and visitors alike.

The Calleen Art Award is an acquisitive national painting prize established in 1977 by Mrs Patricia Fagan OAM. Since its early beginnings the award has developed into a significant art prize. The winning work will join the Calleen Collection at the Cowra Regional Art Gallery. The non-acquisitive Central West Regional Art Award was established in 2009.

It is open to artists living and working in the following local government areas: Bathurst, Blayney, Boorowa, Cabonne, Cowra, Crookwell, Forbes, Lachlan (including upper Lachlan), Lithgow, Mudgee, Gulgong, Oberon, Orange, Parkes, Weddin, Young and Wellington. There is also a People’s Choice Award made possible by the Friends of the Gallery.
