Sakura Matsuri Cherry Blossom Festival

SAKURA MATSURI CHERRY BLOSSOM FESTIVAL

Saturday 26 September 2026 | From 9:30am

This September, experience the magic of spring at Sakura Matsuri in Cowra, a vibrant celebration of Japanese culture, cherry blossoms, and one of Australia’s most remarkable stories of peace and reconciliation.

Held at the breathtaking Cowra Japanese Garden and Cultural Centre, Sakura Matsuri reflects the unique friendship formed between Cowra and Japan following the events of WWII, transforming a shared history into a lasting cultural connection built on peace, understanding and friendship.

As Cowra’s cherry blossom trees burst into bloom throughout the town, the festival creates a scene that feels truly unexpected in regional NSW. From the moment you arrive, you’ll be immersed in the sights, sounds and flavours of Japan with Taiko drummers, sumo wrestling, martial arts, tea ceremonies, Japanese food, cultural workshops, market stalls and family-friendly entertainment filling the Garden with energy and colour.

Stall holders from far and wide bring together an incredible range of Japanese food, handmade goods and cultural experiences, making Sakura Matsuri one of the Central West’s most unforgettable spring events.

Beyond the festival atmosphere, visitors can also discover the deeper story behind the Garden itself;  a place born from Cowra’s journey of reconciliation with Japan following the 1944 Cowra POW breakout. Wander through traditional Edo-style buildings, the tea house and famous bonsai collection, while exploring rare Japanese artworks, porcelain, paintings and cultural displays housed within the Cultural Centre.

Held annually as the cherry blossoms come to life, Sakura Matsuri transforms Cowra into a spectacular sea of pink and white and creates an experience unlike anywhere else.

Book your accommodation and secure your tickets now — this is a spring experience not to be missed.
